AUSTIN — Bobby Smith could not wait any longer.

On the heels of a fifth-place showing in the shot put Friday evening at the Class 6A UIL State Track & Field Meet, the Killeen senior returned to Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday for the final competition of his career with the Kangaroos.

Following five throws of the discus, however, Smith was still searching for the form responsible for recently snapping a 21-year-old regional record with a throw measuring 199 feet, 10 inches.

Then, he realized time was running out.

“I was waiting for my last throw to come,” Smith said, “and I figured this is the last year I’m doing this, so why not give it all I’ve got.

“So I pushed as hard as I could.”

The decision paid off as Smith’s final throw measured 183-5, catapulting him to a third-place finish.
