Multiple Teams · Etherly transforms into ‘powerful force’

Killeen’s Janelle Etherly stands out on the volleyball court, and while she might not be the most imposing figure out there, she boasts extraordinary skills that make her a fierce opponent to deal with.

Before the 2016 season ever began, when Lady Kangaroos head coach Joanne Knowles told people she was moving the 5-foot-3 libero to middle blocker, they laughed.

“Janelle has always been a libero,” Knowles said. “Her senior year, to move her from libero to middle blocker, I understand it is comical and kind of funny. But that was the response people had.”

The third-year head coach wasn’t joking, and Etherly’s play this season has been no laughing matter unless you are a player, coach or supporter of Killeen — or Etherly herself.

“Now we’re sitting third in district,” Knowles said, “and it’s funny because when Janelle does something good, she laughs on the court.

“She sees the humor in it, too, but she’s 5-3 and a powerful force.”
