ROUND ROCK — Marcellus Johnson tossed three touchdown passes and scored on a 29-yard run to lead the Killeen Kangaroos to their first win of the season, 31-17 over Round Rock McNeil on Friday at Dragon Stadium.
The Roos (1-3) trailed 17-7 at halftime, but took command with a 17-point third quarter.
Zion Love caught a 29-yard scoring pass from Johnson — their second TD connection of the night — to get the comeback started and pull the Roos within 17-14 early in the second half.
Moments later, the Roos’ Elijah Tunupopo intercepted Mavericks quarterback Zane Kampfer and Killeen took the lead for good with 5 minutes, 21 seconds left in the third quarter when Montego Muckelvaney broke a tackle and scored after catching a pass from Johnson.
Jesus Gomez added a 23-yard field goal late in the period to put Killeen up 24-17.
In the opening minute of the fourth quarter, Willie McGee blocked a McNeil punt and Johnson scored on the next play.
The Roos defense did the rest, forcing a turnover on downs and getting another interception from Tunupopo and one by McGee.
